About
Buergbrennen brings an ancient Luxembourg tradition to Belgium, Wisconsin, where a massive bonfire marks the symbolic end of winter and the arrival of spring. The tradition dates back hundreds of years in Luxembourg, and Belgium’s connection to it is especially fitting: the Ozaukee County community was founded predominantly by Luxembourgish immigrants in the 1800s and remains closely connected to Luxembourg heritage today. The Wisconsin celebration began in 2024 and has become an annual spring event at Buechler Farms.
The centerpiece is the Buergbrennen bonfire, traditionally built from wooden pallets and other combustible material and lit by the town’s most recently married couple. A torchlit procession leads participants from the barn to the burn site before the enormous blaze is set alight, turning an old European seasonal ritual into one of Belgium’s most unusual community traditions. The event has also included food and drinks, vendors, kids’ activities, live entertainment and other family-friendly attractions at Buechler Farms.
