About
Milwaukee Krampusnacht is an annual winter folklore event that brings the Alpine tradition of Krampus into the heart of Milwaukee’s Brewery District. Rooted in Central European myth, Krampus is a horned, half-goat figure associated with Saint Nicholas who punishes the “naughty” during the holiday season. The event reimagines this tradition through a modern, local lens, combining folklore, street theater, and Milwaukee’s creative arts culture into a single immersive winter celebration.
Each year, the event typically unfolds across multiple outdoor spaces and nearby venues, where visitors encounter roaming Krampus performers, masked characters, and themed costuming. The Krampus Parade is the highlight, with elaborate costumes, percussion, and fire-lit visuals adding to the atmosphere. Alongside the performance elements, local makers and artists set up a dark holiday market featuring handmade goods, artwork, and holiday gifts.
Beyond the parade and performances, Milwaukee Krampusnacht usually includes live music, food and drink specials from local breweries and vendors, and a range of interactive activities. Past programming has included mask-making, storytelling rooted in winter folklore, tarot readings, and family-friendly craft areas. The result is a layered event that blends eerie folklore tradition with community festival energy, offering a distinctly Milwaukee take on a centuries-old winter myth.
