Sputnikfest

Sputnikfest is an annual sci-fi celebration in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, honoring one of the strangest moments in local history: the day a piece of the Soviet satellite Sputnik IV crashed into the city. On September 5, 1962, a 20-pound fragment of the Russian spacecraft reentered Earth’s atmosphere and landed near the intersection of North 8th Street and Park Street in downtown Manitowoc. Rather than letting this bizarre piece of Cold War history fade away, the community turned it into one of Wisconsin’s most unique festivals, celebrating space exploration, alien culture, and the city’s unexpected connection to the Space Age.

Held annually after Labor Day at the Rahr-West Art Museum grounds, Sputnikfest combines local history, science fiction fandom, and classic Wisconsin festival fun. The event has earned national attention as one of the “Top Five Funkiest Festivals” in the country according to Reader’s Digest, and visitors from across the region come to experience its unusual mix of cosmic creativity and small-town charm. The festival celebrates the famous “Sputnik landing” with live entertainment, food and refreshments, vendors, art activities, a public 5K run/walk, and reenactments of the discovery of the fallen spacecraft fragment.

The highlight of Sputnikfest is its out-of-this-world costume culture, where attendees embrace their inner extraterrestrial with elaborate alien and space-themed creations. Activities typically include the Alien Pet Costume Parade, Cosmic Kids Costume Parade, the Captain Space Debris Parade and Costume Contest, live music, children’s activities, trivia challenges, an Alien Drop Raffle, and performances retelling the story of Sputnik IV’s unexpected arrival in Manitowoc.
