Wisconsin Frights
Today is the 140th anniversary of Milwaukee's dead Today is the 140th anniversary of Milwaukee's deadliest fire. On this day in 1883, the Newhall House burned to the ground, taking with it at least 76 lives. Many of them are buried in a mass grave marked by this monument in Forest Home Cemetery. Among the survivors of the fire was Charles Stratton, better known by his stage name General Tom Thumb, and his wife Lavinia Warren. A firefighter carried them down the ladder under his arm.
