Devil’s Lake State Park – Lake Monster

Native American legends tells of an ancient battle between thunderbirds and water spirits that formed what is now known as Devil’s Lake in Baraboo. They left behind many effigy mounds around the lake, and though many were destroyed by the construction of cabins and motels around the turn of the century when the lake first became a popular tourist destination, some still remain. One such mound is the Bird Mound on the south shore with a 200-foot wing span. It’s the only mound known to contain a burial.
The spirit of a Native American in a canoe is said to appear on the lake. Indigenous legends also tell of a tentacled lake monster witnessed by the tribe during a particularly bad drought one summer.
Writer and H.P. Lovecraft publisher August Derleth believed areas around Sauk County contained highly potent vortices of energy he called “cthulhu power zones.” Occultists from Chicago shared this belief, and conducted rituals on the shore of Devil’s Lake to raise Lovecraft’s Old Ones from the depths.
There were many lake monster sightings in Devil’s Lake in the 1920s and 30s, but even now, every once in a while, someone will spot something in the water from high up in the bluffs.

Aztalan State Park – Ancient Spirits

Not far from the potentially sunken necropolis of Rock Lake is Aztalan, a site settled by the ancient Middle Mississippian culture (the effigy mound builders) around 1050-1100 AD. Aztalan is believed to have been a northern outpost for their great city of Cahokia, and served as an important ceremonial complex. The village consisted of many small earthen mounds and three larger platforms upon which stood a temple with a sacred fire, the chief’s residence, and a mortuary structure.
But the village was mysteriously abandoned around 1200 AD. They left behind skeletal remains showing signs of having been burned and butcheredโevidence that human sacrifice and cannibalism may have taken place at Aztalan.
“The first formal scientific excavation of Aztalan, in 1919, determined the perimeter of the stockade and its watch towers; underground within the enclosure were found house sites, tools, pottery shards and more,” travel editor John Bordsen writes in an article for The Charlotte Observer. “The fire pits and refuse piles also were found to contain butchered and charred human bones and heads: It was clear that people had eaten people here.”
“That the Woodland tribes of southern Wisconsin had no formal cities โ and no oral history mentioning Aztalan โ thickened the air of mystery at the site,” Borden says.
In the 1830s, when the ruins of Aztalan were first discovered, they believed it was built by the Aztecs of pre-Columbian South America, a culture known for their practice of ritual human sacrifice.
Some visitors believe the spirits of these ancient people still dwell at Aztalan. Visitors have heard mysterious sounds, encountered orbs and strange lights, experience extreme unease like they’re not supposed to be there, or even feelings of being stalked or hunted. In some reports, visitors have witnessed shadowy figures and apparitions around the mounds, especially at dusk or after nightfall. These sightings often involve fleeting glimpses of movement or shapes that vanish upon closer inspection.

Trempealeau Mountain – Man-Eating Mothman Family

The Ho-Chunk believe Trempealeau Mountain is a sacred place at the intersection of the Upper and Lower worlds. It is believed to be inhabited by Wakฤ zika, the spirit chief of rattlesnakes, and that the snakes guard burial mounds on the mountain.
Itโs also the site of some bizarre creature sightings going back to the 1970s.
In 2010, a man who identified only by the initials “RB,” opened a Blogspot account to share one single post. And it is the most terrifying mothman encounter you’ll ever hear.
RB was walking the railroad tracks along the Mississippi River near Trempealeau Mountain one warm June night in 1975 when he decided to investigate a loud flapping sound coming from the mountain. He climbed to the top of the mountain in the growing dark, finally reaching a clearing on the summit illuminated by moonlight where he made a shocking discovery.
“I saw a large nest in the middle of the clearing with what looked like four or five moth-like baby birds in it,” RB wrote. “But the most amazing thing was the very large moth-like creature who was flapping his wings. The sound of his flapping had covered my approach, and he did not see me hidden in the bushes nearby. I think he was flapping his wings to keep the babies cool since the night air was quite warm. Right in front of me, and between the nest and me, was a large pile of what appeared to be chicken bones, feathers, and dog and cat bones. The pile stunk bad, and combined with all the feces around the nest, it made it REAL bad.”
RB watched the mothman babies and mothman father for some time in astonishment, until the female returning to the nest. She must have been out hunting, because returned with a meal.
“She was dragging a dead human body by one leg,” RB wrote. “Then she threw the body onto the chicken bone pile, and headed for the babies in the nest. The Mothman babies made clicking sounds and acted glad to see her. This Mothman female was a very scary sight. She must have weighed 300 to 400 pounds, with large claws and muscles.”
Comments on RB’s post corroborated his claims, with others having seen similar things in the area. There was even a rash of missing cats and dogs during that time, and one woman saw her little dog Biffy get scooped right out of the yard by one of these mothman creatures.
Trempealeau Mountain is part of Perrot State Park, so if you want to investigate the area for mothman, just make sure you have your state park sticker. And you should probably watch out for rattlesnakes, although they may be the least of your worries if a man-eating mothman still inhabits the bluffs.

Rock Island State Park – Haunted Lighthouse

The northern-most point of Door County, Rock Island at the tip of the Door Peninsula is uninhabited and only accessible by ferry. There are 40 primitive backpack camping sites accessible only by hiking, as no cars are allowed. It’s known for the historical Pottawatomie Lighthouse, which was established in 1836 and is Wisconsin’s oldest lighthouse, as well as some stone buildings constructed later.
Visitors and guides have reported unexplained phenomena at the Pottawatomie Lighthouse, including doors opening and closing on their own, mysterious thumping noises, and an eerie atmosphere. Some believe these occurrences are linked to the spirit of the original keeper, David Corbin, who died on the island in 1852 and is buried nearby. Reports also include sightings of ghostly children playing and strange lights within the lighthouse.
During Corbin’s time keeping the lighthouse, he reportedly experienced bizarre phenomena: walls leaking unknown fluids and a growing sense of paranoia. After his death, subsequent keepers also experienced unease and mental deterioration in the building. One keeper even claimed to see the frozen corpses of two lost boaters drifting in a ghostly state months after their disappearance.
In the early 20th century, inventor Chester Thordarson purchased much of Rock Island, constructing several distinctive stone structures, including a boathouse and a water tower. It’s rumored that Thordarson collected rare books on the occult, fueling speculation about supernatural influences on the island. Although there’s no documented evidence of Thordarson experiencing anything paranormal, his sudden death in 1945 is cause for conjecture that he may have encountered something evil.
Campers report unexplained footsteps and voices in the night despite being alone.
Reddit user ScaryThirdEye recounted a deeply unsettling experience while staying at a remote campsite on Rock Island in August of 2021. After a quiet afternoon setting up camp, they heard a high-pitched squeal from the forest. Later in the evening, it got even weirder. “As I was setting some sticks up in my fire ring, something caught my eye and I looked up. Fairly far away, it looked like it might have been at site D or a little further, was a person running in my direction,” they wrote.
It appeared to be a woman in loose gray clothing. And then she vanished. Simultaneously, the strange squeal returned, now much closer and behind the camper.
A check around the other campsites turned up no one who looked like the woman running through the woods.
At another point during their stay, an old man came by who claimed to be camping at a seemingly empty site. The man asked if they had heard the screeches in the woods.
“A demon lives on this island,” the old man said.

Lizard Mound State Park – Effigy Mound Spirits

Lizard Mound State Park is yet another mysterious location marked by ancient effigy mounds. Many of them were destroyed long ago for farmland. In his book Washington County Paranormal, local researcher J. Nathan Couch writes about an incident in 1912 in which farmers unearthed the bones of a giant.
In the 1960s, an archaeologist from the Milwaukee Public Museum excavated one of the mounds where they discovered the skeletal remains of a woman and an infant. They created an exhibit in the mound with a window looking in on the remainsโwhich I remember from my visits as a childโbut that was removed some time after the skull was stolen.
Couch also details a strange account in which a family was visiting the park at night to investigate the legends. When the dad decided to provoke the spirits of a particular circular mound where no snow or leaves supposedly collect, the air turned cold, leaves started blowing, and a sound like many people running at them through the woods surrounded them. Feeling as if they were being chased out, they ran for their car as inexplicable red lights emanated from the woods.
Paranormal Phenomenon
- Protective spirits
- Giant skeletons
- A mound that doesn’t collect leaves or snow
High Cliff State Park – Strange Energies

High Cliff State Park is located in Sherwood, WI at the northern end of Lake Winnebago with cliffs formed by the Niagara Escarpment, and besides some great camping spots, it’s a place steeped in history and legend. The Niagara Escarpment is a bedrock ridge that begins at Niagara Falls in New York, arcs up through Canada, and then down into Wisconsin. And, notably, many of Wisconsin’s significant locations known for hauntings and high strangeness run along the ridge. Indigenous cultures believed it had mystical and spiritual significance, so they buried their dead by it.
High Cliff is home to many of these effigy mounds, and it’s near them that much of the strange phenomena is said to occur, as well as inside the lime kilns.
“High Cliff has some very intense energy – lots of different people have lived and died there over the years,” Reddit user mosaic_prism writes. “The Native Americans and their mounds and then the small village that was once there during the lime kiln eraโฆI find the energy is most potent up by the campground, by the mounds and on the red bird trail.”
“Don’t forget that one gentleman who finally had his bones found a few years ago,” user MarriedMule13 adds.
User RicoFSuave said, “Yeah looking through the woods towards the lake when standing up on the campground and mound area, it’s like you can feel the spirits there.”
On the Unexplained Research board, one user wrote, “On the Indian Mounds Trail, phantom sounds have been witnessed. Birds, insects and small critters have been known to stop prior to unusual events. It is my belief that the land in and around High Cliff have strong ‘memories’ that connect to you. There certainly is something spiritual there. Possibly because it is an ancient burial site.”
“There certainly is something spiritual left here, it is felt as well as heard and seen,” another said.
Paranormal Phenomena
- Strange noises
- Feeling of being watched
- Sudden temperature drops/gusts of warm or cold air
Kettle Moraine State Forest – UFOs and Cryptids

The Kettle Moraine State Forest stretches across the state, comprising 56,000 acres of mysterious Wisconsin landscape that was shaped long ago by the Laurentide Ice Sheet into a jagged terrain. Across both the northern and southern units, numerous encounters with strange creatures ranging from Bigfoot to dogmen have been reported. In the southern unit, the Beast of Bray Road stalks the farmland outside of Elkhorn. in the north, Goatman sends hapless drivers over the edge of Hogsback Road to their deaths. Nearby at Holy Hill, the news falsely reported a Bigfoot encounter in 2006 when clearly the witness had encountered a bearwolf: “The head looked like a cross between a bear and a wolf,” Steve Krueger stated.
In the heart of the Kettle Moraine lies Dundee Mountain, where extraterrestrial encounters have been baffling residents for more than a century. Local legends Bill Benson and Robert “UFO Bob” Kuehn hosted a gathering of UFO witnesses, contactees, and abductees in the 1980s at Benson’s lakeside tavern, and the result was so overwhelming they continued to hold UFO Daze every year until Benson passed away in 2021.
Camp at the Long Lake Recreation Area to hike the trail to the top of Dundee Mountain, and keep a lookout for mysterious lights in the sky once night falls.
