The Hotel Chequamegon
101 Lake Shore Dr W, Ashland, WI 54806
The Hotel Chequamegon on the shore of Lake Superior in Ashland may be one of the most haunted hotels in Wisconsin. Staff and visitors have reported unexplained noises, disembodied voices, and objects moving on their own. The apparition of a man in a top hat has even been seen strolling halls of the beautiful, Victorian-style hotel.
Most reported ghostly encounters seem to happen in the attic, as well as room 314.
The original Chequamegon Hotel was built several blocks west of the current location (701-703 W. 2nd Street) in 1877 during the area’s lumber boom. It was later condemned as a fire trap and torn down. The Culver Hotel was built in its place in 1915. That later became the Menard Hotel in 1924, which burned to the ground in the early hours of January 1st, 1957 after an explosion was heard in the bar. That location today is Menard Park.
