Car on the Ice Contest
The Menominee Lions Club puts a car on the ice of Lake Menomin and sells raffle tickets to enter the contest with a guess as to when the “Klunker” will break through the ice when it begins to thaw in spring. Winners and runners up get cash prizes. Proceeds benefit numerous charitable events and organizations throughout the year.
The annual Ice Breaker contest has happened every year since 1961.
In 2022, the Klunker was a racecar that floated instead of sinking. Weight was added to the car in 2023 to ensure it sank like it’s supposed to.
Author Neil Gaiman, a long-time resident of Menominee, wrote his novel American Gods at a cabin on the lake. Besides setting a pivotal moment of the plot at House on the Rock, he also included the Klunker contest in the book.
The car is put on the ice when it becomes thick enough. It usually breaks through late March to early April.
Tickets are available at locations in Menominee.
