The Man Who Built a Castle in Wisconsin

Documentary about Pete Kelley and the castle he built in Tomahawk, WI

So you want to build a castle.

But where do you even begin?

According to Pete Kelley, you start with a beer holder and work around it.

That’s how we do it in Wisconsin.

Kelley began building his castle on a small Lake Killarney island near Tomahawk in 1987.

By hand.

One wheelbarrow load at a time across a narrow foot bridge.

And he hasn’t stopped since.

Today, Kelley Castle is a wonder and a testament to ambition. It stands among the pines as a (fortified) reminder that dreams are attainable and anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Even if your dream is building a medieval fortress in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

In the documentary Pete’s Castle, Rhinelander filmmaker Nate Sheppard crafts an intimate and humorous portrait of Kelley and the secrets behind his lifelong obsession.
