About
Aztalan State Park is one of Wisconsin’s most unusual haunted locations, where an ancient archaeological site, mysterious burials and centuries of unanswered questions have created an eerie backdrop for modern paranormal reports. Located along the Crawfish River near Lake Mills, Aztalan was a fortified Middle Mississippian settlement occupied roughly from A.D. 1050 to 1250. The settlement covered more than 20 acres and was surrounded by a massive wooden stockade, with large earthen mounds used for important structures and burials. Archaeologists don’t know exactly why the community was abandoned, adding another layer of mystery to a place that was already associated with death and ritual.
The site’s name is itself a modern invention. When archaeologists began studying the ruins in the 19th century, they compared the mysterious earthworks to the legendary city of Aztlán, the ancestral homeland of the Aztecs described in Mexican tradition. There is no archaeological evidence connecting Wisconsin’s Aztalan inhabitants to the Aztecs, but the name stuck. Aztalan also became tangled with another enduring Wisconsin mystery: nearby Rock Lake. For more than a century, stories have circulated about a necropolis of submerged pyramids beneath the lake. No evidence of these pyramids have been found so far, but the legends have become inseparable from the mystique surrounding Aztalan.
The archaeology at Aztalan provides plenty of material for darker theories. One of the site’s most famous discoveries was the so-called Princess Burial, an elaborately buried young woman found beneath a mound with three belts containing nearly 2,000 shell beads, including shells originating from the Gulf Coast. A burned charnel house was also discovered within the northwest mortuary mound, containing the remains of 11 people. Other human remains recovered at Aztalan showed evidence of burning, cutting and breakage that some early archaeologists interpreted as evidence of cannibalism. Modern researchers are more cautious, noting that the remains may instead reflect complex mortuary rituals. Evidence for ritual violence and possible human sacrifice has likewise been proposed, but cannibalism and sacrifice should be treated as archaeological interpretations rather than established facts.
