The Shullsburg area was struck with a cholera outbreak in 1854 that killed two dozen people. This cemetery is also the final resting place of many members of the Lamar family. Charles Lamar married the oldest Berry daughter Mary (of nearby Berry Tavern) in 1842. Mary died of tuberculosis in 1850 and was buried here. Charles remarried. But when the Cholera outbreak happened in 1854, he returned home from a business trip in Chicago to find his wife and 5 of his six children dead.
Most of the burials are unmarked.
The cemetery was forgotten until is was discovered again in the 1950s when a county truck accidentally plowed up a gravestone.
