About
Rising from the highest point in Dunn County, Elk Mound Hill Castle is a rugged stone observation structure built in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Constructed with locally quarried rock and salvaged materials from a dismantled livery stable, the tower was later dedicated to deceased Dunn County mail carriers. From its summit, visitors can see for miles across western Wisconsin, with rolling farmland and dense forest stretching in every direction. Despite its scenic appeal, the tower’s remote hilltop setting and the surrounding woods create an atmosphere that feels increasingly isolated the longer you stay.
Beneath the surface, Elk Mound carries a much older and far stranger story. Local legend claims that a fire-breathing dragon lies buried deep within the mound itself, a tale that has persisted for generations and shaped the area’s identity. Whether folklore or something more symbolic, the legend feeds into the unsettling experiences reported by visitors. Many describe the woods around the tower as unnaturally quiet before erupting with distant screams or bursts of maniacal laughter. Others report strange lights flickering through the trees, thick mists moving against the wind, and a persistent feeling of being watched as they approach the structure.
Climbing the tower only intensifies the unease. The narrow stone steps, enclosed and echoing, have become the focal point for some of the most disturbing encounters. Visitors frequently claim to feel an unseen presence brushing past them, or even pushing them, as they ascend. Combined with the site’s isolation, its unusual history, and the weight of its legends, Elk Mound Tower has become one of Wisconsin’s most overlooked haunted locations, where natural beauty and unexplained phenomena exist side by side.
