Perched on a wooded rise at the edge of the village, Walnut Grove Cemetery (better known as Glenbeulah Cemetery) carries a reputation that extends far beyond Sheboygan County. Weathered stones dating back to the mid-1800s lean at uneven angles across the hillside, some cracked or collapsed entirely, giving the grounds a sense of slow decay. The road leading up narrows and bends through dense trees before opening to the cemetery, creating a natural separation from the town below that feels deliberate. Even during the day, the setting is quiet in a way that feels heavy and unnatural rather than peaceful.

Local legend centers on a violent death said to have taken place among the trees. According to the story, a man attempting suicide by hanging himself from a particular tree instead suffered a gruesome accident when the rope severed his head, which reportedly rolled down the hill toward town. Visitors have long claimed to see a figure moving between the graves after midnight. Some gravestones are said to glow faintly, while others are tied to stranger claims, including one where shoes appear and disappear without explanation.

One of the most visited graves belongs to Grace Baumann, an infant buried in 1943. Although Grace is said to actually be buried with her parents in different cemetery, visitors leave toys and stuffed animals at Grace’s grave, and some believe they have seen a small childlike figure watching them curiously from behind a nearby tree. Stories like these helped cement the cemetery’s place in folklore as Wisconsin’s most haunted cemetery, amplified by the seemingly false rumor that it once appeared on a haunting episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Today, access is closely monitored, with strict hours in place due to past vandalism and persistent rumors of Satanic rituals taking place after hours.
