The original Chequamegon Hotel opened in 1877 during the city’s lumber boom and was built by Wisconsin Central Railroad interests as a destination hotel for travelers arriving by rail. The Victorian-era wooden hotel eventually fell into disrepair, was condemned as a fire hazard, and was demolished in the 1890s. A later hotel built on the site, the Culver Hotel, became the Menard Hotel in 1924 before burning to the ground after an explosion in the bar on January 1, 1957. That location is now Menard Park.
