About
On the still waters of Phantom Lake in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, an old Potawatomi legend tells of love, jealousy, and three people who met a horrifying fate beneath the surface. The lake was once known as Spirit Lake, and a 1942 Wisconsin Historical Society record of Prairie Potawatomi legends identifies Phantom Lake with a story of two lovers who perished in a canoe because of a jealous rival, with their spirits said to return each year.
According to the more detailed version of the legend, a young Native American maiden was promised to one suitor but loved another. On a crisp September night beneath a pale moon, the two rivals met on Phantom Lake, each balancing in a canoe as they fought for her. Then something far stranger entered the story. A phantom hand reportedly rose from the dark water and dragged the maiden beneath the surface, her screams echoing across the lake before abruptly disappearing. In some versions, the two men are pulled under as well, leaving the lake to keep their secret.
The legend says the tragedy never completely ended. On chilly September nights, Phantom Lake is said to replay the encounter, with ghostly figures appearing to drift across the water in canoes as the voices of the dead rivals carry over the lake. Some versions even describe the faint cry of the maiden disappearing beneath the surface. Whether you regard it as a piece of Indigenous folklore, a classic Wisconsin ghost story, or something more unsettling, Phantom Lake remains one of Mukwonago’s strangest haunted legends.
