About
Studio Moonfall is not your typical bookstore. This independent bookseller, publisher, and working art studio at 5031 7th Avenue is the creative home of author and illustrator Donovan Scherer, whose work spans illustrated novels, coloring books, comics, games, and animation. The shelves lean heavily toward fantasy, horror, science fiction, comics, D&D, and other wonderfully strange subjects, with a mix of new and used books alongside art prints, stickers, pins, dice, and other finds. Scherer also uses the shop to showcase local and independent authors and artists, giving Studio Moonfall the feel of a permanent artist-alley booth where you might walk in looking for a book and leave with a monster print, obscure paperback, or something you didn’t know existed.
The bookstore’s appeal extends beyond its shelves. Studio Moonfall hosts author and artist events throughout the year and serves as the home of the Kenosha Book Festival, a monthly April-through-September series featuring around 20 local and independent authors, thousands of $1 used books, entertainment, and food trucks. Its annual calendar also includes the G.O.O.B.E.R. clearance sale, with discounts of up to 50 percent on books, games, and Dungeons & Dragons merchandise, and BookoWeen, the shop’s Halloween-season anniversary celebration. For readers interested in horror, weird fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, indie publishing, local art, or the stranger corners of Kenosha‘s cultural scene, Studio Moonfall is one of the city’s most distinctive bookstores.
