Known today as The Bend, this restored downtown West Bend theater is a landmark that carries nearly a century of local history, along with something far harder to explain. The theater first opened in the early 1930s, its glowing marquee lighting the streets of West Bend through decades of change, including a 1960 campaign stop by John F. Kennedy. After years of decline and eventual closure in 2009, the building was revived and reopened in 2020 with many of its original Art Deco details intact. But the restoration didn’t erase the stories. If anything, it gave them a stage again.
At the center of the legend is longtime manager Rolland “Rollie” Meade, who died inside the theater on November 20, 1985 after suffering a heart attack while descending from the projection booth. Former employees and witnesses describe Meade as a constant presence in life, and possibly in death. Reports began almost immediately after his passing. Workers heard the unmistakable jingle of his keys outside locked doors. The heavy projection room door opened and closed on its own. Footsteps echoed through empty corridors. Those who knew him say the sounds were specific, familiar, and impossible to mistake.
Over the years, the stories expanded. A police officer once reported seeing a man moving inside the theater after hours, only to find the building empty. Others describe shadowy figures crossing the auditorium, including one that appears to walk directly into the movie screen and vanish. In the basement, remnants of the building’s vaudeville past remain, along with rumors of older tragedies. Today, The Bend hosts live bands, performers, comedians, and occasionally shows movies. The lights are back on, and the building is alive again, but something else may be too.
