Madison Ghost Walks

American Ghost Walks brings Madison’s darker history to life with a series of guided Madison Ghost Walks through some of the city’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods. Developed from original research by tour founder Mike Huberty, who launched Madison’s first ghost tour in 2010, the walks combine historical records, interviews with people who experienced unexplained events, local lore, and reported paranormal activity. The routes are more haunted-history investigation than haunted-house spectacle, taking guests through real Madison streets and past buildings with stories of tragedy, strange encounters, and lingering spirits.

Several Madison routes are offered, including the Capitol Square Spirits Ghost Walk, which explores King Street, Capitol Square, the Majestic Theatre, Gamma Ray Bar, and Tempest Oyster Bar; the Lost Souls of State Street Ghost Walk, featuring the Orpheum Theatre, Wisconsin State Capitol, Madison Masonic Temple, and Grain Exchange Building; and the UW Campus Ghost Walk, which explores legends surrounding Science Hall, Bascom Hill, Library Mall, and other University of Wisconsin landmarks. Depending on the route, expect roughly 90 minutes of walking, evening departures, and an easy-to-moderate pace. Stories include the ghost of an actor reportedly haunting the Majestic Theatre, unexplained activity at former funeral-home-turned-music-venue Gamma Ray Bar, and questions about whether workers killed in an 1883 Capitol accident still haunt the building.

If you want to experience haunted Madison without the actors, jump scares, and manufactured effects of a haunted attraction, American Ghost Walks offers a distinctly different way to explore the city after dark. The tours focus on real locations and reported experiences, while acknowledging that no supernatural encounter can be guaranteed. Tours generally run on weekends around 7:30 p.m., with routes operating in cold temperatures and light rain, so comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
