There are several places where you get an old timey photo in Wisconsin Dells if you want, but there’s actual historic photography significance here—it’s where tourism in the Dells began. Built in 1875, it’s the original studio of H.H. Bennett, one of the most important landscape photographers in American history. It’s said that Bennett would snap photos of tourists as they got off the river steam boats (back when the Dells was known as Kilbourn City) and had them developed and ready to buy by the the time they boarded to go home. Bennett’s world-famous photo of his son jumping across Stand Rock and his stereoscopic images of the rocky river scenery made the Dells the popular vacation destination it is today. During Halloween season, the studio hosts a Spirit Photography event exploring ghost images, Victorian seances, and photographic trickery.
