Kitsch & Weird Wisconsin Dells
It may be the โWaterpark Capital of the World,โ butย Wisconsin Dellsย also has a dark side for those of us who want more from our vacation than wave pools and lazy rivers. The Dells is home to fun spooky attractions likeย Haunted Mansion, the lingering spirits of the areaโsย haunted history, and even theย actual severed head of a serial killer.
Hodag Country
One of the strangest Wisconsin cryptids can be found lurking in Rhinelander. There, the mythical hodag can be found everywhere you look, from the Worldโs Largest Hodag Statue at the visitor center to the life-size re-creations youโll find at the Pioneer Park Historical Complex.
Haunted Wisconsin History
Some of theย most haunted placesย in the world can be found in Wisconsin. From the ruins ofย Summerwind Mansion, where the ghost of an 18th-century explorer still searches for his missing land deed, dark and chillingย haunted roads, and the ghost ofย Ed Gein, toย Shakerโs Cigar Barย where you can spend the night with a spectral prostitute and tour the haunts ofย Jeffrey Dahmer.
Wisconsin’s Roadside Wonders
Experience the dark, twisting surreal spaces ofย The House on the Rock. See JFKโsย World Famous Ball of Twineย that God told him to make. Explore weird sculpture gardens. Storm the gates of Mars Cheese Castle. Wonder the graveyard of Spartaโs fiberglass molds. Pray the bowling ball rosary. Wisconsinโs backroads are full of oddities.
Ed Gein Tour
Ed Gein was the inspiration for Norman Bates,ย Texas Chainsaw Massacre,ย Silence of the Lambs, and many more, and he called Plainfield, WI home. Many of the locations associated with Geinโs life and crimes can still be seen today, from the property where hisย house once stood, theย jail cell turned museumย where he was held after his arrest, and hisย final resting placeโฆsurrounded by the empty graves he robbed to make his ghoulish crafts.
Close Encounters
Wisconsin isnโt the first place you think of when it comes to flying saucers and little green men, but thereโs so muchย extraterrestrial activityย here that for years there were no less than threeย UFO festivals around the stateย commemorating strange sightings. UFO research as we know it was pioneered here byย Coral Lorenzenย after she witnessed an unidentified flying object in the 1930s. Not to mention we have the curious case ofย alien pancakesย in Eagle River, a police officerย killed by a UFO in Elmwood, and aย UFO base in Dundee Mountain.
